What is a Court Case Record?

Court case records are the official documentation of a court proceeding or case. They document what happened in a case, including the legal arguments made, evidence presented and how the court ruled. Common documents contained in a court case record include criminal citations, pleadings, motions, orders, evidence, reports, dockets, video recordings and transcripts.

How to Request Court Case Records

All requests for copies of case court records and information on how to review court case records start with the clerk of the court that heard the case or proceeding. Only the court clerk can advise as to the location or availability of a court case record. Call or visit the appropriate court clerk to request copies or access to court case records.

  • Circuit, Family, District and Business Courts: If the case or proceeding was heard by the Circuit, District, Family or Business Court, contact the Office of Circuit Court Clerk in the county in which the case was handled. Use the Find a Court/Circuit Court Clerk by County dropdown above to get contact information for the appropriate clerk's office.
  • Kentucky Court of Appeals: If the case and proceeding was heard by the Kentucky Court of Appeals, contact the Kentucky Court of Appeals clerk at 502-573-7920.
  • Supreme Court of Kentucky: If the case and proceeding was heard by the Supreme Court of Kentucky, contact the Supreme Court clerk at 502-564-5444
Depending on the type and age of a case, the court case record may be stored in the court clerk's office or at a record facility, or it may have been destroyed as authorized by the Kentucky Court of Justice's Record Retention schedules.

Current record retention schedules can be found at the following links:

If the court clerk states the court case record is being stored at a record facility and is available for public access, the court clerk will identify the record facility and provide the case and file locator numbers to assist with access and copies.
